Plataforma Biscet - Príncipe de Asturias de la Concordia

Platform of Support to the Candidature of
Dr. Oscar Elías Biscet
to Príncipe de Asturias of Concordia Award 2009

Dear All,

For over 6 years the Cuban doctor Oscar Elias Biscet, has been unjustly imprisoned for maintaining a determined and courageous attitude in defense of freedom and human rights in his country.

On December 6th, 2002, he was arrested with 16 other dissidents when they tried to meet in a house in Havana to discuss about human rights.  When the police prevented them from entering the house, Oscar Biscet and the others sat on the street in protest and shouted slogans like 'Long life to human rights "and" Freedom for political prisoners."

He was arrested and judged with several dissidents in March 2003 and he was sentenced to 25 years based on the article 91 the Criminal Code. Although he lived and was judged  in Havana, he is currently imprisoned at the Kilo 5 ½ prison in the province of Pinar del Rio.

Numerous international human rights organizations consider him as a prisoner of conscience, detained just for being peacefully exercising his fundamental freedom and they ask for this immediate and unconditional release.

We believe that his exemplary behavior and resistance to injustice,  deserves of public recognition.

For that reason, we invite you to support his candidacy for the Prince of Asturias Award for Concord 2009 and to demand his immediate release.

You can read a brief biography here.
